đź‘‹ Hi! I'm Jen.

Jennifer Akkermans is a Canadian mixed-media artist based in Calgary, Alberta. She holds an MFA from the University of Waterloo and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art + Design (now the Alberta University of the Arts).

Her signature approach, known as intuitive printmaking, blends acrylic gel plate prints, hand‑made stencils, collage, pattern, and found objects to craft vibrant, layered imagery that reflects memory, emotion, and belonging.

Jennifer has exhibited widely across Canada at venues including Pier 21, the Esker Foundation, Niagara Artists Centre, Inter/Access, Stride Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Calgary. She has participated in prestigious residencies at the Banff Centre, Artscape Daniels Launchpad, Living Arts Centre, Gushul Studio, and the Fluid Festival. In 2015, she traveled to Cologne, Germany as the Shantz Intern to work alongside artist Alexandra Bircken. Jennifer has received grants from the Ontario Arts Council, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and other regional agencies, and her work is included in numerous private collections.

My Creative Philosophy

My work is rooted in process-led improvisation. Through gel plate printing—where color meets chance— I layer pattern and texture to discover unexpected visual language. I love to play with layers of stencils and masks, often built up from my own SVG designs. I use collage to weave stories (perhaps they're dreams?) centered on feeling rather than literal representations.

My aesthetic is fun, joyful and bright, bold and yet intimate, inviting you to explore the emotive landscapes of color, line, and pattern. I create art not just to be seen, but to be felt.

For You, the Creative Adventurer

This space is for individuals like you (Hi creative adventurer!) who are curious, playful, and ready to explore art in a hands-on way. Whether you’re building your stencil collection, testing layering techniques, or simply seeking joy on the page, my tools and encouragement will help you feel confident and empowered at every step.

You’re welcome here—whether you come to print, to cut, or just to experiment with color in community.

Art is Connection

I believe art is a conversation—between the hand and the surface, the heart and the process. I invite you to join the dialogue, cut your first stencil, make your own prints, and discover what happens when creative intention meets playful experimentation.

Thank you for stopping by. I can’t wait to see what you create! ❤️
